This photograph looks almost like a scene from early science fiction, but it was taken in Nikola Tesla’s New York laboratory in 1894.
Mark Twain is holding one of Tesla’s experimental vacuum lamps. The lamp appears to have no conventional electrical connection because it was being energized using Tesla’s high-frequency electrical apparatus. A loop of wire received electromagnetic energy from a Tesla coil that was outside the photograph. Tesla himself can be seen watching from the darkness behind Twain.
Experiments like this were part of Tesla’s fascination with transmitting electrical energy without ordinary wires. He demonstrated that high-frequency alternating electromagnetic fields could induce currents and illuminate specially designed lamps at a distance.
Twain wasn’t simply a random visitor either. He and Tesla knew each other personally, and Twain visited his laboratory to witness experiments firsthand. Tesla’s laboratory became something of a spectacle, attracting writers, journalists and other prominent figures interested in the strange new world electricity was creating.
The photograph was later published in The Century Magazine in 1895 as part of an article titled “Tesla’s Oscillator and Other Inventions.”
More than 130 years later, the image still feels futuristic: one of America’s most famous writers standing in darkness with a glowing lamp in his hands while one of history’s most famous inventors watches from the shadows.
For 1894, it must have looked almost like magic.
