For decades the left has treated one claim as a conversation-ender: illegal immigration must be tolerated because “Americans won’t do those jobs.”
That line is not new. More than a century ago, defenders of another cheap, captive labor system said the same thing. The economy would collapse, they argued, without a permanent underclass to do the hard work in the fields. The wording has been cleaned up. The premise has not.
The facts on the ground do not match the talking point. Millions of American citizens want work that pays a living wage and lets them support a family. Flooding the labor market with unauthorized workers does not fill some mysterious shortage. It holds wages down, undercuts people already in the trades, and tells employers they never have to compete for domestic labor.
There is also a simpler question. These workers entered the country in violation of federal law. A country that will not enforce its borders is not sovereign. Laws that apply only when convenient are not laws.
Enforcing them is not extremism. It is the minimum a functioning nation owes its own citizens.
