Nick Shirley walked into California hospice operations with a phone and the buildings emptied. Tens of millions in suspected billing games do not survive sunlight. Gavin Newsom’s answer, in the joke that writes itself, is legislation aimed at the kid with the camera rather than at the operators who fled. That ranking tells you who the state thinks the problem is.
Medicare and Medicaid hospice money is supposed to follow dying patients, not shell suites and ghost enrollment. A government that cannot police its own vendors will police the auditor. Citizens who pay the freight already assumed somebody in Sacramento was watching the claims. The empty locations say otherwise. One reporter did the intake visit the inspectors skipped.
American health dollars are not an honor system for connected shops. Prosecute the fraud. Publish the ownership. Stop treating a teenager’s footage as the threat. Newsom can regulate cameras or he can regulate the billers. He does not get credit for both. Keep the kid filming. Make the next flight out belong to the people who billed for care that was never in the building.
