Twenty-five years after al-Qaeda murdered nearly three thousand people in New York, the city is led by its first Muslim mayor. Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist, took office in January after winning election as the first South Asian to hold the job in the place that suffered most that morning.Governor Kathy Hochul appears at events wearing a hijab. The new mayor is shown in prayer at a Muslim gathering, dressed in an Arsenal jersey. These images land just days before the anniversary, when families still gather at Ground Zero. The contrast with 2001 is impossible to ignore. A generation later, the question is whether “never forget” still means anything in the city that was attacked.
