The locations contained a term that the Interior Department classified as derogatory toward Indigenous women.Since returning to office, President Donald Trump has directed three major geographic name changes. The Gulf of Mexico became the Gulf of America for federal use, Denali returned to its former federal name of Mount McKinley, and Lake Ontario became Lake America in federal records.The Biden changes were mostly smaller geographic features renamed together through one Interior Department process.
