Canadian Prime Minister Carney just embarrassed his country and showed the world what a jackass he is.He held a press event earlier this week outside Parliament Hill in Ottawa. Here’s what he said when asked about resuming trade talks with the USA:“When the Americans stop doing memes, stop throwing shade, stop trying to be tough, and start being serious about having those discussions, we can have those discussions. But it's look, it's not constructive, but that's their democracy."Seems Carney is upset at Trump renaming Lake Ontario and Treasury Secretary Bessent mocking the idea of Canada being at war with the US.While I understand his pride is wounded, Canada needs the USA. The vast majority of what that country produces for export ends up here in the USA whereas the same is not true for US exports.Almost 72% of Canadian exports end up in the USA but only 15% of US exports end up in Canada.So a prolonged trade war will hurt us, but nowhere near as bad as it will impact Canada.These trade numbers also hide another important thing. Most of Canada's free trade agreements with other countries are dependent on Canada having access to the US market.So the domino effect will be huge. Canadian leaders need to stop being jerks and pretending they hold any cards in these negotiations.Canadians need to recognize their dependence on the USA, start treating our businesses fairly, and come back to the negotiating table before it's too late, memes or no memes.
