Kathy Hochul put on a hijab for a photo opportunity in a city that still has an open wound from September 11. Twenty-five years is not ancient history. It is the living memory of the people who ran down the stairs and the families who never got a body back. A governor who treats that calendar as a costume change has already decided which audience she works for.
New York’s political class has spent a generation trading security and cultural confidence for applause from the same networks that treat American grief as optional. Sanctuary rules, soft enforcement, and official theater in religious dress are the same project: signal belonging to everyone except the people who buried their dead here.
A state that forgets why the skyline changed will keep electing people who find the memory inconvenient. Hochul’s record on crime, taxes, and ICE obstruction is the substance. The headscarf is the advertisement. Voters who still think 9/11 was an attack rather than a diversity seminar have a clean test in front of them. Replace the governor who performs for the other side of that test.
