Three young children were strangled in their own home by the one person who should have protected them. Now a jury of nine women and three men has spent days deadlocked over whether postpartum psychosis erases criminal responsibility for that act.
Mental illness is real, but so is the planned nature of these killings and the fact that countless mothers endure far worse without harming their kids. Treating infanticide as a medical event rather than a crime invites a dangerous double standard.
One juror apparently refuses to go along. That person is doing what the law requires: holding the line that taking innocent lives still demands an accounting, no matter the diagnosis or the tears in the courtroom.
