Hochul joined the community for the midday Friday prayer service, addressed congregants, and toured the affiliated school afterward. Video of her appearance, including footage of her speaking before an audience that appeared largely male, quickly spread across social media. Supporters see the gesture as basic respect for the customs of a religious institution she was visiting. The Islamic Cultural Center School described Hochul’s visit as recognition of its role in the community and thanked her for supporting a New York where people feel safe and respected. Critics see something very different. They argue that a female governor who identifies as a feminist voluntarily adopting a gender-specific religious dress custom raises legitimate questions about where cultural respect ends and accommodation begins. The images also create an interesting comparison with prominent female politicians in Europe. In 2017, France’s Marine Le Pen was asked to cover her hair before meeting Lebanon’s Grand Mufti. She refused, and the meeting was canceled. In 2025, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Saudi Arabia with her blonde hair uncovered. Saudi Arabia does not require visiting foreign women to cover their hair, so Meloni was not documented as refusing a demand, but the visual contrast remains striking. Together they show very different approaches to religious and cultural expectations. Hochul chose accommodation while visiting a mosque, Le Pen explicitly rejected a head-covering requirement, and Meloni conducted official business in Saudi Arabia without wearing one. Supporters of Hochul call her choice respectful.
