Madison Marsh is a US Air Force officer, a licensed pilot, a Harvard graduate student, and the first active-duty service member ever crowned Miss America, in more than 100 years of the pageant. Her path there reads like 2 lives running at once. Space Camp at 13, dreaming of being a pilot and an astronaut. Flying lessons at 15, a private pilot's license at 17, a physics degree from the Air Force Academy, then selection for pilot training and a master's in public policy at Harvard while serving. But the center of her story is her mother. Whitney Marsh was a runner who kept running through chemotherapy. She died of pancreatic cancer at 41, when Madison was 17, months before her daughter reported to the Academy. Madison founded the Whitney Marsh Foundation with her father and younger sister, and its races in her Arkansas hometown have raised roughly a quarter of a million dollars for research and early detection. At Harvard, she worked on using artificial intelligence to catch the disease sooner. When the crown came, at 22, the Air Force kept her on active duty, and she spent her year as Miss America working both jobs at once, in a crown some days and a flight suit on others. Her advice to young women, in her own words: "The sky is not the limit and the only person that's stopping you is you."
