Clayton Doerman, 7, Hunter Doerman, 4, and Chase Doerman, 3, were shot with a .22-caliber Marlin rifle taken from a gun safe in the master bedroom. Their mother, Laura Doerman, was shot through the thumb as she fought for the gun. Her daughter from a previous relationship, Alexis, watched and tried to carry the youngest boy to safety, when Doerman ordered her to put the child down and finished the shooting. Details: 🔷️Doerman came home early from work, paced the house with a Bible, and muttered that “Chad knows what’s right.” 🔷️He asked the family to lie down for a nap, then got the gun and shot Hunter first. 🔷️Laura screamed for the other boys to run and called 911. One call captured her saying her husband had shot her baby before the line dropped. 🔷️During a struggle over the rifle, he bit Laura and fired through her thumb. He then shot Chase. 🔷️Doerman chased Clayton into a field behind the house, shot him as he ran, then shot him again after he fell. 🔷️After the boys were dead, he lined their bodies up in the yard and sat on the stoop until deputies arrived at 4:27 p.m. I🔷️n the suppressed police interview - later released in video form - Doerman said “Listen to me. I kept over and over. I said, I got bad thoughts. I got bad thoughts. Help me out. Take me to the doctor."" You know, ’cause I don’t know. I don’t know where I was going. I got I’d go to work. I didn’t even know I’m going to work. I kept calling mom."" I kept calling dad. Kept calling everybody. I know my whole family to help me. Nobody would help me. Nobody helps me at all. Just take me somewhere.” He also told detectives he had “crazy thoughts,” needed to go to a doctor, and scheduled a stop at the Little Clinic inside a Kroger that morning after his mother suggested it because he said he was having “confusing feelings.” He walked to the clinic counter, stayed about a minute and a half with no one at the desk, and left without being seen. He later said he had “horrible thoughts thinking I was living in the Bible.” His statements weren't allowed in court because a detective continued asking questions after Doerman asked for a lawyer - a jury never heard them. As part of the August 2024 plea, the defense withdrew both the insanity plea and the serious-mental-illness motion.
