If Democrats were hoping Friday’s March on Washington would become some kind of launching pad for the midterms, the optics could hardly have been worse.They assembled more than 90 organizations, brought in nationally known Democratic politicians, wrapped the entire production in the imagery of Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic march, and then proceeded to deliver the same political sermon Americans have been hearing for years.Voter suppression. Racism. Fascism. Authoritarianism. Trump. Trump. Trump.And politically speaking, almost nobody showed.Yes, several thousand people attended according to news reports, but look at the photographs. Look at the enormous empty spaces around the Lincoln Memorial. For something carrying the name “March on Washington,” backed by a massive organizational machine and promoted as a national voting rights emergency, the turnout was abysmal.Maybe Americans simply are not buying the story anymore.Democrats have spent years portraying basic election safeguards as sinister attempts to disenfranchise voters. Listen to some of the arguments against voter ID and citizenship requirements and you would think women and minorities are somehow uniquely incapable of producing documentation.That argument is not merely condescending, it is politically bizarre when voter ID remains broadly popular with the American public, including substantial support among Democratic voters.At some point victim politics stops working.And that may be part of a bigger Democratic problem. What exactly are they offering voters besides another warning about Donald Trump?Housing? Inflation? Energy? Crime? Education? Government spending?Instead of a compelling governing agenda, Americans keep hearing that Trump is a fascist, democracy is disappearing and another election safeguard is secretly Jim Crow.Meanwhile, the socialist wing of the left is gaining influence precisely because at least it is offering frustrated progressive voters an economic program, however disastrous we believe those policies would be.Was this rally a preview of November?Too early to know.But if Democrats intended this spectacle to demonstrate a country mobilizing against Trump, those pictures told a very different story.
