•They Were Taught How To Bow To Baal…While Living In God’s Land”•By Joshua AdamsThe frightening part of Jeremiah 11 isn't that Judah forgot God existed.They tried to keep God while making room for other gods.That is a very different kind of rebellion.These were covenant people.They had His Word.They had His history.They had His promises.They had His land.And still God said:“According to the number of thy cities were thy gods, O Judah.”Jeremiah 11:13Think about that.God had delivered their fathers from Egypt, established His covenant with them, warned them repeatedly, and yet the land He had given them became filled with altars to Baal.They didn't need to leave God's land to commit idolatry.They brought idolatry into it.Then comes one of the hardest warnings in Jeremiah:“Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and though they shall cry unto me, I will not hearken unto them.”Jeremiah 11:11We need to stop reading passages like this as though ancient people were simply foolish enough to worship statues and therefore it has nothing to do with us.Idolatry has never required stone.It requires competition.Whatever receives the allegiance that belongs to God alone has become an idol.And modern Christianity has become dangerously skilled at putting Christian language around things we refuse to surrender.We can sing about Jesus while worshiping approval.Quote Scripture while worshiping politics.Talk about blessing while worshiping money.Preach holiness while secretly protecting sin.Call Jesus Lord while allowing culture to decide which of His words we're willing to obey.That is what should terrify us about Jeremiah 11.Judah had enough religion to recognize God.They just didn't have enough faithfulness to belong wholly to Him.God was not asking to become one important part of their lives.He demanded covenant faithfulness.He still does.Maybe the question isn't whether you believe in God.Maybe the question is whether something else has been allowed to share His throne.Because an idol doesn't stop being an idol simply because you put it next to a Bible.Read Jeremiah 11.Then ask God to show you what you have learned to bow to without calling it worship.#Jeremiah11 #Idolatry #Baal #BibleStudy #BiblicalTruth
