Apparently, Megan Rapinoe has fired back at former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom after his removal from a Chicago Sky game during a confrontation with Natasha Cloud. Freedom, who was wearing a shirt defining a woman as an adult human female, later said he was simply supporting women and defending women’s sports. Rapinoe criticized Freedom on her Why Are You Like This? podcast, arguing that he and others opposing transgender women in female sports were acting in bad faith. She also pushed back against the idea that men are needed to protect or build women’s sports, saying women’s sports do not need men in order to succeed. The comments have drawn attention because Rapinoe has long supported transgender participation in women’s sports. In a 2023 Time interview, she said she would absolutely accept a transgender woman on the U.S. women’s soccer team, even if that player took a roster position, and said she sees trans women as real women. The dispute is part of a much larger debate over biological sex, transgender participation, fairness, and eligibility rules in women’s sports.
