When Justin said he didn't smoke, Miranda pulled out a handgun and pressed it against the side of his head.Miranda demanded his wallet, phone, and keys. Justin said he only had $30 in cash and handed it over — but Miranda wasn't satisfied. He racked the gun. It jammed. He racked it again, ejected the bullet onto the ground, picked it up, and told Justin, "Look, it's a hollow point. I'll blow your brains out." Then he ordered Justin out of the car at gunpoint.What Miranda didn't know is that Justin, a 6-foot-2, 250-pound mixed martial arts competitor with a background he only described as "former military" and "hostage rescue," was trained for exactly this. Justin disarmed him within seconds. In the struggle that followed, the gun went off — and Miranda shot himself in his own ankle. Justin pinned him to the ground and held him there, he says, while Miranda begged to be let go, telling him he had a baby. Justin kept him restrained until police arrived.Miranda was charged with armed robbery and aggravated discharge of a firearm and held on $350,000 bond.
