On 18 January 1945 the SS evacuated Auschwitz. About 56,000 prisoners were forced to march to Wodzisław Śląski, about 60 kilometers away, in freezing temperatures. Those who could not keep up were shot. Prisoners had little food and inadequate clothing. Thousands died on the way. From Wodzisław they were loaded onto open freight cars and sent to camps inside Germany.
