*”SOME PEOPLE CALL IT “JUST A DREAM.” SCRIPTURE CALLS IT A SPIRITUAL BATTLE MOST BELIEVERS IGNORE”*
By Pastor Jason Answers
Modern culture laughs at the idea of spiritual intrusion. Nightmares get reduced to psychology. Fear gets blamed on stress. But the Bible refuses to treat the unseen world as harmless. Scripture speaks plainly about spirits, oppression, and the vulnerability of the human heart when it is unguarded.
Job 4:13 to 16 describes a night vision where a spirit passes before a man and dread floods him. First Samuel 16:14 says a tormenting spirit troubled Saul. The Gospels show Jesus confronting unclean spirits that influenced minds and bodies. The biblical worldview is direct. Sleep is not always just rest. It can be a battlefield.
That reality offends modern pride because it shatters the illusion of total control. Ephesians 6:12 says our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces in unseen realms. When believers ignore that, they drift into spiritual passivity. Passivity is dangerous.
Scripture also draws a line. The Bible never glorifies darkness. It exposes it and then points to God’s authority over it. James 4:7 says submit to God, resist the devil, and he will flee. The power is not in fear. The power is in alignment with Christ.
The image of a spirit trying to enter a sleeping person forces a hard question. What fills your mind before sleep? What doors stay open through bitterness, lust, occult curiosity, unforgiveness, or rebellion? Proverbs 4:23 says, ""Guard your heart, because everything flows from it."" Night vulnerability usually starts long before night.
Jesus changes the entire conversation. Luke 10:19 shows that authority over darkness belongs to those who walk in His name. The New Testament does not present believers as helpless victims. It calls them watchful, prayerful, and rooted in Christ.
Psalm 4:8 says, "" In peace I will lie down and sleep, for You alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.
