Federal authorities have arrested Representative Francisco Paulino on charges of pandemic-related fraud. An elected official now faces the possibility of decades in prison for allegedly exploiting programs created during a national emergency. That development places the focus where it belongs: on personal accountability rather than political affiliation.
Emergency relief funds were distributed at unprecedented speed and scale. The same conditions that helped legitimate recipients also created openings for abuse. When a sitting member of Congress is accused of taking part in that abuse, the public is entitled to a full and transparent prosecution without regard to party.
Public office is not a shield. Taxpayers who watched trillions move out the door during the pandemic have every right to demand that anyone who diverted those funds—especially those who held positions of trust—face the maximum legal consequences. The case now moving forward is a test of whether that standard still applies equally.
