a whistle is not a serious self-defense plan. Neither is a restraining order: It’s a piece of paper!
Sure, a whistle might make noise. So does a car alarm. How many times have you heard one screaming in a parking lot while everyone keeps walking? Noise does not guarantee help is coming, and even when people realize something terrible is happening, there is no guarantee they will step in. We have all seen videos where bystanders pull out phones while someone is being attacked.
That is the hard reality. When seconds matter, hoping a stranger hears you, understands what is happening, and decides to risk himself to intervene is not a plan.
A firearm, in the hands of a trained, responsible, law-abiding woman, changes that equation. It gives her the ability to defend herself when she is physically overmatched. It gives a mother the ability to protect her children. It gives a woman alone at home a means of defense that does not depend on her being stronger, faster, or luckier than the person threatening her.
That does not mean simply handing someone a gun and calling the job finished. Responsible gun ownership means training, safe storage, understanding the law, learning judgment, and respecting the enormous responsibility that comes with carrying or keeping a firearm.
Those are skills worth teaching our daughters.
We teach young women how to drive, how to manage money, how to recognize danger, and how to protect their personal information. Why would we refuse to teach them how to competently use one of the most effective tools available for protecting themselves?
A whistle can call for help. A firearm can give a woman the ability to defend herself until help arrives.
Teaching our daughters to shoot safely and responsibly is not teaching them to live in fear. It is teaching them not to be helpless.
