Iryna Zarutska was murdered on a public train in Charlotte because basic security was absent. Her family is now suing the city for that failure. When a municipality allows its transit system to become a hunting ground, the people who pay taxes and ride those trains have every right to demand accountability in court.
Cities that defund, demoralize, or restrain their police while crime climbs are not victims of circumstance. They are authors of the danger. Empty platforms, unmonitored cars, and repeat offenders left on the street produce predictable body counts. The lawsuit simply forces the responsible officials to face the human cost of their choices.
Taxpayers deserve transit systems that do not double as crime scenes. When leadership prioritizes ideology over safety, the bill comes due in both blood and civil judgments. Supporting the family’s claim is supporting the principle that public authorities must actually protect the public or answer for the consequences.
