He was born two minutes after his brother.At Memorial High School's graduation in Frisco, Texas, on May 21, Hunter Metcalf walked across the stage, collected his own diploma, then came back a few moments later. An announcer said he would accept the posthumous diploma on behalf of his brother Austin. The arena stood and applauded for about thirty seconds. Hunter was born two minutes after Austin and graduated cum laude. He was holding his brother when he died at a track meet in April 2025, stabbed once in the chest during an argument over a team tent.On June 9 a Collin County jury convicted Karmelo Anthony, who was also 17 at the time, of murder. They rejected his self-defense claim and manslaughter as a lesser charge, and sentenced him to 35 years. No member of that jury was Black; prosecutors had struck three potential Black jurors on the grounds that they worked in education, and the judge allowed it. Court records do not show whether the appeal takes up that point. Since then the case has moved again. On Wednesday the trial judge was removed after giving a television interview in which he said the jury got it right. On Thursday and Friday a retired judge heard Anthony's motion for a new trial; his lawyers argue that a last-minute dispute over withheld evidence left him unable to testify in his own defense.
