20. For ye were bought with a price:
1 Corinthians 6:20; KJV
Chapter 6 is a powerful message from Paul to believers, to protect the dignity and sanctity of a believer's relationship with Christ.
Believers were dragging one another to pagan courts, and immorality had spread rampantly in the church under the guise of Christian liberty.
Paul addresses their moral failure, which was behind all their lawsuits.
Paul also teaches that a believer should follow a life of purity.
His reasoning: if we are the body of Christ, and He is in us, we are asking Christ to join in our sin, and the outcome will not be good.
We come to today's verse: we are bought with a price, the blood of Christ paid our debt to sin.
Therefore, we are in debt to Christ, to glorify Him in our daily actions, speech, and deeds, for we no longer belong to ourselves, but to Christ, God, and the Spirit.
The lesson: we were purchased from death into eternal life with the blood of Christ.
Shall we return to this life that leads to destruction and death, making Christ's sacrifice of no effect?
We are told to flee, run from immorality.
We are the body of Christ; shall we drag it through the gutter of the world's sins
The most powerful lesson is that we were like this once.
Christ paid our debt to set us free.
Shall we return to a life that ends in destruction
We were changed into a new creature when we asked Christ to save us.
Who can throw that away, without suffering a great and eternal loss? Amen.
