Do they even hear themselves? What in the world.
Mehdi Hasan — founder and editor-in-chief of Zeteo and a former MSNBC host — sat down with fellow progressive Sam Seder of The Majority Report and tried to sell everyone on the idea that the American left has no real extremists. None. Just a bunch of friendly folks who'd like us to be a little more like Denmark.
Here's how he put it: "The far right wants Nazism and ethnic cleansing. The far left wants Medicare for All. That is not the same thing."
From there he called the American left "Scandinavian social democrats." Then "FDR Democrats." Then, on a good day, "Danish centrists." And he wrapped it up with this: "The Democratic Party under Mamdani and Abdul and Bernie are trying to go back to FDR Democrats, and the Republican Party are trying to go back to Jim Crow Democrats."
Come on. Let's be real.
The people he's defending aren't chasing FDR's New Deal. They're card-carrying members of the Democratic Socialists of America — and the DSA isn't hiding the ball. Their own 2025–2026 program calls for a "new democratic constitution," abolishing the Senate, and replacing the President and the Supreme Court with bodies that answer to Congress.
That's not a New Deal. That's a wrecking ball aimed at the Republic.
And the loudest crew driving it — the Marxist Unity Group, which now holds a majority stake on the DSA's National Political Committee — says the quiet part right out on its own website. Tear down the "slaveholder constitution." Take power "by any means necessary." Get ready for "armed self-defense." FDR wanted Social Security. These people want a constitutional convention and something they flat-out call communism.
Calling that "Danish centrism" isn't analysis. It's gaslighting, and I think Hasan knows it.
And Republicans turning into "Jim Crow Democrats"? That one's just stupid. Nobody is taking anybody's right to vote away, period. Show me the law. You can't, because there isn't one. But it sure is a handy thing to yell when your own side is quoting Marx and you need everybody looking the other direction.
The Founders built the Senate and the separation of powers on purpose — to stop exactly this kind of "any means necessary" mob politics. Strange, isn't it, that the folks lecturing the rest of us about extremism are the only ones with an actual written plan to burn it all down.
