The cartoon is funny because the father’s answer cuts straight through the bull crap.
His son asks why people keep supporting socialism when it always fails. Dad replies, “Because they expect someone else to do the work, son.”
That is the sales pitch in one sentence.
Socialism promises benefits without honestly discussing who must produce them, who must pay for them, or what happens when the producers finally run out of money, incentive, or freedom.
The historical record is crystal clear.
The Soviet experiment collapsed.
Mao’s collectivization helped produce catastrophe.
Cuba delivered rationing and repression.
Venezuela took enormous oil wealth and turned it into shortages, economic ruin, and an exodus of its own people.
The excuse is always the same. Those examples were not “real socialism.”
The next government will have better experts, kinder leaders, and smarter plans. Somehow, concentrating more power in fewer hands is supposed to produce a different result.
It will not.
Socialism fails because politicians and bureaucrats cannot replace millions of people making voluntary decisions. When government dictates prices, production, wages, and distribution, shortages follow.
Political connections become more valuable than talent or hard work. Eventually the government must use coercion to force people to cooperate with a system they would never choose freely.
Free markets are not perfect because human beings are not perfect.
But free markets give the common man choices.
He can work, save, build a business, change jobs, serve customers, own property, and improve his family’s future without first begging a government official for permission.
Competition also disciplines power. If one company fails you, another can earn your business. When government controls everything, there is nowhere else to go.
Socialism promises equality, but usually produces equal dependence beneath a protected political class.
Free enterprise spreads opportunity and lets ordinary people rise.
The next attempt at socialism will not be different, because politicians have not changed human nature.
This cartoon and summary should be shared as a warning before another generation discovers that lesson the hard way.
Why do you think socialism continues attracting supporters despite its unmistakable record?
