Two minutes of video would do it. That's all Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear is asking of Mitch McConnell, who has been missing from the Capitol for nine weeks, and this weekend Beshear went on national television to say the senator absolutely refuses.
McConnell hasn't cast a vote or entered the Capitol since June 14, when a fall sent him to a hospital and then rehab. His entire proof of life is a few written statements from staff and two stiff photos beside his wife. No voice. No video.
On Face the Nation, Beshear laid it out: a short video or one call into Fox News would end the mystery by dinnertime. A senator's boss is the people who elected him, he said, and they've gotten nothing. That's why the Senate feels broken. They don't think they answer to anyone.
He's right, and here's the part that burns.
Since entering the Senate forty years ago, McConnell has voted against creating or expanding medical leave, paid and unpaid, at least 23 times.
He voted down the Family and Medical Leave Act. As majority leader in 2020 he blocked an extension of paid sick and family leave while the pandemic raged. In 2022 he voted to deny rail workers seven days of it.
So there's no federal guarantee of a single paid sick day in this country. A woman who gives birth is owed zero paid weeks to recover.
And the man who built that wall is nine weeks into taking exactly what he denied everyone else, drawing his full $174,000 salary the whole time, more than $29,000 already banked while he decides whether the public has earned a video.
A new mother in Paducah is back at the register in ten days because rent doesn't pause. McConnell disappears for two months, shows no one his face, and the money shows up anyway.
He finally found a sick leave policy he likes. It covers one person, and it doesn't require him to appear on camera.
