July 1, 1941: Lwów.
A single photograph captures the terrifying speed at which humanity can collapse.
In the center, a young Jewish woman cries out in agony, beaten and stripped by a mob of her own neighbors, local militia, and occupying soldiers.
She is completely defenseless against a sudden, violent eruption of hatred in the streets of her city.
Yet, beside her, an older woman reaches out. Amidst unimaginable chaos, she desperately tries to shield and cover the younger woman—a fragile, heartbreaking gesture of protection in a world entirely devoid of mercy.
We do not know the young woman's name or her ultimate fate, but we must never look away from her face. Her suffering is a permanent, painful warning of the catastrophic cost when empathy dies and neighbors become perpetrators.
