Lviv, July 1, 1941. A terrified Jewish woman runs for her life, stripped to her undergarments, while an adolescent boy and a young child pursue her with a stick. This was not an abstract statistic. It was a human being—frightened, humiliated, and hunted because she was Jewish. The violence against Lviv’s Jews was fueled by Nazi forces and local collaborators, but the crowds also included ordinary civilians—men, women, teenagers, and even children. A German camera crew documented these scenes. The photographs remain as devastating evidence of what happened when antisemitism, hatred, and dehumanization were unleashed.
