Look closely at this one, because the whole story is in the background.
Up front is the fight everyone is watching. The GOP elephant is dug in, sweating, straining to hold on to power. The Democrat donkey is pulling just as hard, because the party has made one thing its entire mission, and that is beating Donald Trump. To do it, they have thrown the tent flaps wide open, all the way out to the Democratic Socialists of America.
A strategist screams from the sidelines. A slip of paper that says the stock market is booming blows past, and nobody bothers to catch it.
The prize in the middle of the mud is one banner. The Midterms.
Now look up the hill. That is where the war is actually being fought, and neither party is even facing that direction. A whole generation is walking toward the socialism banner, carrying signs that read can't make rent and still renting at 39. They are not marching because a professor tricked them. They are marching because the math of their lives is not working.
This is not a scare story. A 2025 Cato and YouGov poll found that 62 percent of Americans aged 18 to 29 hold a favorable view of socialism. The tent is not just open, it is filling up. Zohran Mamdani, a proud DSA candidate, won a Democratic primary for mayor of New York City by running up the score with young voters.
Here is the part both parties are missing. Whoever wins the tug of war in November wins a trophy in a fight that may not matter. If the socialist coalition gets built and held, this midterm becomes a footnote.
They are fighting over the rope. The other side is building the future.
