•”ONE MAN SLAUGHTERED EIGHTY-FIVE PRIESTS IN A SINGLE DAY”•
By Pastor Jason Answers
King Saul believed David was surrounded by traitors. Then Doeg the Edomite stepped forward and accused Ahimelech, priest of Nob, of giving David bread and Goliath’s sword.
Saul summoned Ahimelech and the priests. Ahimelech defended David, insisting he had known nothing of any rebellion. But Saul had already decided their fate.
“You shall surely die,” the king declared.
Saul ordered his guards to kill the priests of the Lord—but they refused to raise their hands against them.
Doeg did not hesitate.
At Saul’s command, he struck down eighty-five men who wore the linen ephod. Then he attacked Nob, the city of the priests, killing men, women, children, infants, and even its animals.
Only Abiathar, one of Ahimelech’s sons, escaped. He fled to David carrying the terrible news.
David immediately understood: his actions had placed the household of Ahimelech in danger.
A paranoid king gave the order. A ruthless servant carried it out. And an entire priestly city paid the price.
