We already know how quickly border policy can change when administrations change. That is not speculation, we watched it happen.During the Biden years, illegal crossings at the southern border rose to historically high levels. Border authorities recorded roughly 8.6 million migrant encounters nationwide between January 2021 and October 2024, while fiscal year 2023 alone saw nearly 2.5 million encounters at the southwest border. The administration also relied heavily on parole programs and other legal pathways that allowed large numbers of migrants into the country while their cases moved through the immigration system. Supporters argued those programs created more orderly alternatives to illegal crossings, while Republicans argued they amounted to mass release into the country. Then came the most revealing part. When the Biden administration finally imposed tougher asylum restrictions in June 2024, crossings fell sharply. CBP itself reported a significant decline following those restrictions, and Reuters later reported illegal border arrests had fallen dramatically from the levels seen earlier that year. That matters because it demonstrated something Americans had been arguing about for years.Policy matters.A president has enormous influence over enforcement priorities, asylum rules, parole programs and what happens to migrants after they reach the border. That is the point of this cartoon. The border can be tightened, and it can be loosened. We have watched both happen within just a few years. So when politicians tell you their immigration philosophy does not matter, remember what actually happened the last time Washington changed direction. The real question going into the next election is not whether border policy could change again. It is whether voters believe a Democrat controlled Congress would want to keep the current enforcement posture or reverse it.We all know the answer to that one...Do you think Democrats will reopen the border if they gain control in 2028?
