This meme is stunning because the contrast almost does the arguing for you.
In the same week, two of the most recognizable progressive women in American politics put two very different ideas about unborn life in front of the public.
Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey signed a law removing the state’s previous list of specific conditions governing abortions after 24 weeks. The new standard leaves the decision to the professional judgment of a physician. Supporters say the change is meant for women facing devastating, complicated pregnancies and prevents doctors from being boxed in by rigid statutes. Critics see something much darker, a state abandoning any meaningful gestational limit once a child is viable.
That is what makes the image so jarring.
Massachusetts law has also recognized the unlawful killing of a viable fetus as homicide. So think about the moral contradiction. If a criminal attacks a pregnant woman and kills her viable unborn child, the law can recognize a second victim. Yet in the abortion context, the state has now removed the specific post-24-week restrictions and trusted the decision entirely to physician judgment.
Then, almost simultaneously, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez publicly documented the process of freezing her eggs. She said she had been considering it for a long time and wanted more control over her future fertility. There is nothing wrong with wanting children someday or preserving that possibility. In fact, that desire is deeply human.
What makes it striking is that AOC has been one of Congress’s most vocal defenders of abortion rights, including supporting federal protection for abortion access. Now she is taking deliberate medical steps to preserve the possibility of creating life later.
That does not make her a hypocrite by itself. It does, however, force a question our politics usually avoids.
Why is potential life precious enough to preserve at enormous personal effort in one setting, while viable unborn life can be treated so differently in another?
That is what makes this meme less funny than sad.
