This cartoon calls it the Democrats’ “Nobody Is Above the Law” starter pack.I think that label is false advertising.A more accurate title would be, “Some people in Washington seem to live above consequences.”Look at the pattern. Hunter Biden was convicted on federal gun charges and pleaded guilty to federal tax charges, then President Joe Biden gave his son a sweeping pardon covering federal offenses committed or potentially committed from January 1, 2014, through December 1, 2024.Anthony Fauci received a preemptive pardon from Biden covering potential federal offenses connected to his government service through January 20, 2025. That pardon does not prove Fauci committed a crime, but it certainly limits what federal prosecutors can do regarding conduct covered by it.Then there is Hillary Clinton.Her private email investigation ended without criminal charges in 2016. Years later, Washington is still arguing about investigations, subpoenas and accountability, but Americans have seen very little that resembles the aggressive consequences politicians constantly promise for everyone else.Ghislaine Maxwell is the exception.She was actually convicted and sentenced to 20 years for helping Jeffrey Epstein sexually abuse underage girls. Yet even Maxwell was later transferred from a low-security federal prison to a minimum-security federal prison camp in Bryan, Texas.Her legal team has pursued release and clemency, and the Senate recently went so far as to unanimously oppose any presidential pardon or commutation for her.Washington loves saying “nobody is above the law.” It sounds fantastic at press conferences.But the phrase means nothing if politically connected people can spend years under investigation, receive pardons, avoid prosecution, or simply wait until the public moves on.Nobody should be prosecuted because of politics.But nobody should be protected because of politics either.
