Democrats have spent years insisting that asking for ID to vote is racist. Voter suppression. A threat to democracy itself. Then Zohran Mamdani rolled out his taxpayer funded grocery stores, and the mask slipped in record time.At the announcement, a reporter asked the obvious question. How do you stop people from abusing a 30 percent discount paid for by New York taxpayers?Mamdani's own development chief answered. She said the city wants a "library card-esque" system so the stores can "manage who's buying" and make sure the discounts go to New Yorkers.Read that again. Manage who is buying. When conservatives pointed out the double standard, City Hall sprinted into reverse. Now they promise there will be no ID, no residency check, no income check, nothing at all.So we are left with two options, and neither one looks good for them.Option one, the city builds a membership tracking system to guard its grocery discounts, while calling the same basic safeguard at the ballot box bigotry.Option two, the honor system. Anyone on the planet can walk in and collect a subsidy funded by New York taxpayers, with zero safeguards, because apparently checking is immoral. That is the tell. When fraud threatens their money and their program, their first instinct is to keep tabs on who shows up. When fraud threatens the integrity of your vote, suddenly fraud is a myth and asking questions is racist. The Founders saw this coming. Federalist No. 57 warns that elections only stay free when the process itself is guarded with jealous care. Madison never wrote a word about guarding the discount bananas. Some things never change. Government programs get protection. Your ballot gets a shrug.
