There is a lot to like about U.S. Sen. Darline Graham Nordone, R-S.C., who was appointed to fill the Senate seat held by her late brother, Lindsey Graham. In fact, she has already shown more backbone in a few weeks than some senators manage to show in 20 years.
One of the first things she did was sign on as a co-sponsor of the SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship to register and voter identification to cast a ballot in federal elections. Pretty radical stuff, apparently. You know, proving you are legally allowed to vote before voting.
During the South Carolina Republican Senate debate, Nordone said:
“One of the first things I did was co-sponsor the SAVE America Act. As I said earlier, I’m willing to stay through recess to get it done. But what’s up with recess anyway? Who gets a month off from work? I think we should stay up there and work and get it done.”
She is exactly right.
Who else gets to leave work for a month while the most important items on their agenda remain unfinished? Try telling your boss that the project is stalled, the deadline has passed and you are heading out for a month anyway. Apparently, that is only acceptable when your boss is the American taxpayer.
Nordone is now among the senators supporting remaining in Washington until the SAVE America Act is addressed. What a concept, elected officials actually staying at work until the work is finished.
She also pointed to New Jersey, where roughly 6,600 noncitizens were improperly registered because of a motor vehicle system error, and fewer than 400 cast ballots. Whether that happened through corruption or breathtaking incompetence, the result was the same. Noncitizens were registered, and some voted.
Then came the best part.
Nordone said, “This is where I differ from my brother,” before calling for Republicans to get rid of the filibuster because Democrats will eventually do it themselves.
She is right about that too.
Republicans can keep protecting a Senate tradition Democrats will destroy the moment it stands between them and something they desperately want, or they can use the power voters gave them while they still have it.
Finally, a senator with some cojones, and she is a woman.
