Ask a room full of people who hates the rich, and the loudest hands often belong to those who have been taught that someone else’s success is the reason they are struggling. Ask who wants to be rich, and almost every hand goes up.That contradiction is the fuel behind socialist movements.Socialism does not rise because people suddenly discover a better economic system. It rises because politicians learn how easy it is to turn envy into votes. They point to successful people, call them greedy, blame them for every hardship, then promise to punish them and redistribute what they earned.It is a powerful message, because resentment is easier to sell than responsibility.The truth is, most Americans do not hate success. They want the chance to succeed themselves. They want to build a business, own a home, provide for their families, retire with dignity, and leave something behind for their children.That is the American idea.Capitalism is not perfect, because people are not perfect. But it gives ordinary people the freedom to work, create, invest, take risks, and rise. Socialism offers something very different, a political class deciding who has too much, who deserves more, and who must surrender what they have earned.Once envy becomes public policy, the target never stays limited to billionaires. Eventually, the definition of “rich” expands to include small business owners, professionals, retirees, homeowners, and anyone who has managed to save more than the government thinks they should have.That is why the politics of class warfare is so dangerous.A healthy country teaches people to admire achievement, learn from success, and create more opportunity. A declining country teaches people to resent anyone who has more.The question is not whether some people have become wealthy.
