Politicians almost always start out sounding like us. Then something happens.She was a bartender in the Bronx. That was the whole origin story, and it was a good one. Working class, student loans, no connections. Voters liked it because it was real.Now she has someone holding her umbrella.That image is going to stick, and it should, because it captures something bigger than one rainy afternoon in Washington. This is the same congresswoman who lectures the rest of the country about privilege, about who has too much and who deserves less.In April of 2025 she and Bernie Sanders were filmed stepping off a chartered Bombardier Challenger, a jet that runs up to $15,000 an hour, in the middle of a tour built around fighting oligarchs. Fox News broke the footage. The New York Post ran it. Nobody had to spin it. Fox NewsShe built a career warning the country about carbon footprints, then flew private to the rally.Here is the part that matters more than the hypocrisy. She was elected on an income of roughly $26,600 and now draws $174,000 a year, with a national platform, a book, and a fundraising machine most senators would envy. Good for her. But somewhere in that climb, the lecturing replaced the listening.Madison wrote in Federalist No. 57 that representatives are bound to the people by duty, gratitude and interest, and that they must return to live among the citizens they govern. Brutus warned the opposite would happen, that officeholders would drift into a separate class with separate habits and separate comforts.Brutus is looking pretty sharp right now.And the ideology she is selling is not new. Gallup still finds Americans more negative than positive on socialism, 57 percent to 39 percent. They are right to be. Every version of it, dressed in whatever fresh language, has ended in shortage, rationing and control. GallupYou cannot fight privilege from under an umbrella somebody else is holding.
