A Concorde climbs above New York with the Twin Towers visible behind it.Today, the scene is impossible.The supersonic passenger jet once carried travellers between New York and London in around three and a half hours, flying at more than twice the speed of sound.For decades, Concorde represented the future of air travel.The World Trade Center towers represented the New York skyline.Then both disappeared from everyday life.The Twin Towers were destroyed on September 11, 2001.Concorde’s commercial service ended in 2003 after rising costs, falling demand and safety concerns made the aircraft increasingly difficult to operate.Preserved Concordes still exist in museums, but they no longer carry passengers through the sky.The photograph captures two icons from the same era sharing one frame, neither of which could appear over modern New York in the same way again.At the time, it was simply a photograph of a plane passing a familiar skyline.Years later, it became a picture of a world that no longer exists.
