Ten years ago, John Fetterman was campaigning in a hoodie for Bernie Sanders and running to the left of his own party. He lost that primary. Nobody watching him back then would have guessed he would end up as the last adult in the Democrat Party.Yet here we are.Fetterman rejects the socialist takeover of his own party, flat out. He has said the Democratic Socialists crowd is anti-Israel and anti-America, and that they should not be running under the Democrat banner at all.He stands with Israel without conditions, without hedging, and without the word "but" attached to the end of every sentence.He says out loud what most Americans already believe, that a country has to control its own border, and that enforcing immigration law is not cruelty, it is the job.He is willing to sit down with President Trump and talk instead of treating a handshake like treason.That is not extremism. That is common sense, the kind your grandfather had.The rest of the party cannot manage it. They handed the microphone to the socialists, cheered while their loudest activists took over the primaries, and organized what is left of their agenda around crying about Trump.That is the picture in our cartoon. A Senate chamber turned into a nursery, a tantrum in every chair, crayon signs demanding that we fund everything and eat the rich, and one tired man in a hoodie holding the only coffee mug in the room.Here is the part that should worry Democrats. Fetterman did not move right. He mostly stood still. His party sprinted away from him and toward a politics that working Americans want no part of.When a former Bernie endorser becomes the voice of reason in your party, the problem is not him.
