Ilhan Omar has once again shown where her political loyalties appear to lie, not with the constitutional sovereignty of her adopted country, but with some vague international order dominated by unelected global bureaucrats and far-left activists.Omar has introduced a resolution urging the United States to become a full member of the International Criminal Court and remove sanctions imposed on ICC officials. She claims America has nothing to fear if it respects human rights.That completely misses the point.The question is not whether Americans believe in justice. The question is who gets to administer that justice.America already has courts, juries, prosecutors, military tribunals, appellate review and a written Constitution. Our system provides due process, the presumption of innocence and legal protections developed over more than two centuries.Why would we surrender any portion of that authority to foreign prosecutors and judges who are not accountable to the American people?The ICC was created through the Rome Statute, a treaty the United States never ratified. Joining it would mean accepting the authority of an international institution capable of pursuing American service members, government officials and potentially presidents over decisions made while defending this country.That is not accountability. It is an invitation for politically motivated prosecutions dressed up as international justice.Omar and her allies seem to believe international institutions possess some superior moral legitimacy. They do not. These bodies are influenced by governments that are hostile to the United States, hostile to Israel and often guilty of the very abuses they claim to oppose.The American people elect their leaders. American laws are written by American representatives. Americans accused of crimes must be judged under American law, with American constitutional protections.Full stop.President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are right to resist the ICC’s attempts to expand its reach. American sovereignty is not something Congress should bargain away to satisfy the global left.Would you ever trust an international court to judge American troops or elected officials fairly?
