This cartoon may make people laugh, but the pattern behind it is not simply a punchline.
The bars show the share of adults who reportedly received a professional mental health diagnosis, falling from very liberal to very conservative.
That is different from saying every liberal is mentally ill, or that every conservative is mentally healthy.
It measures reported diagnoses, which can be affected by age, willingness to seek treatment, access to care and comfort discussing mental health.
Researchers using the Cooperative Election Study found that conservatives rated their mental health more positively than liberals, even after accounting for factors including age, religion, marriage and major life events.
A separate 2024 survey of more than 3,000 Americans found that liberals, especially younger liberals, were more likely to make mental health struggles part of their identity.
The same research found that liberal Generation Z women reported especially high levels of depressive symptoms.
That does not prove liberal politics causes mental illness.
Correlation is not causation.
Some people experiencing distress may be drawn toward political messages built around injustice and systemic failure.
At the same time, a worldview that constantly teaches people they are victims of hostile systems may deepen anxiety, anger and helplessness.
Conservatives also tend to be older, more religious and more connected to institutions that provide meaning, family structure and community.
Those factors can strengthen resilience.
Does liberalism make people mentally ill, or does mental illness make people liberal??
