There is a generation of Americans today who never saw the Berlin Wall standing.They never watched the footage of families waving across barbed wire to relatives they would not touch again for decades. They never saw a young man gunned down in the death strip for the crime of wanting to leave.So when polls show young people warming to socialism, we should not be surprised. You cannot remember what you never learned.Here is what the history books used to make plain. The wall was not built to keep enemies out. It was built to keep citizens in. That is the entire story of socialism in a single concrete fact. No free country has ever needed a wall to stop its own people from running away.Some will say, look at Cuba. But Cuba is an island. The ocean is its wall, and thousands have died crossing it on rafts made of inner tubes and scrap wood.Some will say Venezuela is different. Venezuela is simply far away. Millions have fled it on foot, and distance makes it easy for American college students to ignore.And some will say democratic socialism is a new thing entirely. It is not. It is the same product with new packaging, the same promise of equality delivered through state control, the same road that always ends at an empty shelf and a guard tower.The good news is that the cure for this amnesia is simple. It is memory. It is telling the story again, to every generation, of the people who climbed, tunneled, swam, and flew homemade balloons over that wall toward freedom.The Founders understood that liberty is never more than one generation from being lost. That is why they wrote it down, and it is why we keep telling the story.The wall fell because freedom is stronger. But only if we remember.
