There is a special kind of irony on display at these protests, and it deserves a closer look.
The same activists who march under rainbow flags and wear "Love is Love" pins are cheering for movements whose actual laws would put them in prison, or worse.
Let's get specific, because specifics matter.
In Gaza, Hamas enforces a law that punishes homosexuality with up to 10 years in prison. In 2016, Hamas executed one of its own commanders, Mahmoud Ishtiwi, after accusing him of theft and "moral turpitude."
In Iran, the penal code allows the death penalty for same-sex relations. Girls can be legally married at 13, and even younger with a judge's approval.
In Afghanistan, the Taliban has banned girls from school past the sixth grade and pushed women out of public life almost entirely.
These are not smears. These are the written laws and documented actions of the regimes and movements drawing cheers at these rallies.
Now think about what the modern Democratic Party says it stands for. Gay rights. Women's rights. Secular government. Protecting kids.
Every one of those values is a crime under the regimes being celebrated in these streets.
That is the part that boggles the mind. This is not one issue where the left has a blind spot. It is a wholesale contradiction of everything the party claims to believe, waved on a flag in front of the Capitol.
And here is the final irony. The freedom to march, chant, and hold those signs exists because of the American system these same activists love to trash.
Try holding that protest in Tehran. See how long it lasts.
The Founders built a country where you can be loudly, proudly wrong in public. These protesters are living proof.
