Senate Democrats just did something that has not happened in roughly 70 years of the annual defense authorization process.Every Senate Democrat present voted to block the Senate from beginning debate on the National Defense Authorization Act.The vote was 50 to 46, falling short of the 60 votes needed to move forward.This was not a vote on final passage.Democrats did not reject the bill after debating its provisions, considering amendments or negotiating changes. They voted to prevent that entire process from beginning.And they did it while American forces are engaged in a dangerous conflict with Iran.Commercial shipping is under attack. America’s missile and interceptor supplies are facing added strain. Our troops need clear policies, reliable resources and the assurance that Congress stands behind them.Instead, Chuck Schumer and every other Senate Democrat present chose obstruction.Schumer argues that Democrats are protesting a war that was not properly authorized and has no clear strategy or exit plan.Those are serious questions, but the NDAA debate is precisely where senators should raise them.That process gives Congress an opportunity to demand answers, conduct oversight, propose amendments, shape military policy, address readiness and authorize compensation for the troops.Stopping the debate does not hold the administration accountable. It prevents senators from using the very process designed to provide that accountability.This increasingly looks like Democrats are willing to use America’s military as political leverage against President Trump.While our troops confront an Iranian regime that attacks ships, threatens American allies and disrupts global energy markets, Democrats should be rooting for Team America.Instead, they appear more interested in weakening Trump politically, regardless of the message that sends to our enemies.Whatever Democrats intended, Iran received a propaganda gift.Tehran can now point to an entire American political party refusing to advance the nation’s annual defense policy bill while American forces are actively engaged.Did Senate Democrats cross the line by blocking the defense debate during an active military conflict?
