This is what putting America First looks like in practice.President Trump announced a plan aimed at removing illegal immigrants from commercial trucking jobs while opening a faster path for qualified American veterans to enter the industry.The proposal has two basic parts.First, the administration will continue identifying commercial driver’s licenses that were issued to people who were not legally eligible to receive them. States would be expected to review those licenses and revoke any that violate federal immigration or licensing requirements.Second, veterans who operated heavy trucks and similar equipment while serving in the military would receive an accelerated path to a civilian commercial driver’s license. Instead of forcing experienced military drivers to start over as though they had never been behind the wheel, the government would recognize the training and experience they already earned while serving our country.The exact rules still have to be finalized, but the principle could not be clearer.If someone is in this country illegally, that person should not be holding a commercial license and competing with American workers for an American trucking job.If an American veteran already knows how to operate heavy military vehicles safely, that experience should count for something when he or she returns to civilian life.This is not charity. It is common sense.Trucking offers solid wages, independence and a path into the middle class. Veterans bring discipline, responsibility, mechanical knowledge and experience operating under pressure. Connecting those veterans with available trucking jobs is good for them, good for the industry and good for the country.Frankly, this should have happened years ago.It should also be something Republicans and Democrats can support together. Protecting the integrity of commercial licensing, enforcing immigration law and helping veterans build productive civilian careers should not be partisan issues.America has spent far too long putting the interests of people who entered illegally ahead of citizens who served honorably.President Trump is changing that equation.Do you support fast-tracking qualified military drivers into trucking jobs while revoking licenses issued to people who are here illegally?
