NOW TIME FOR SOME GOOD NEWS…In 1948, a group began with the Air Force when Gladys Vandenberg (wife of Chief of Staff Gen. Hoyt Vandenberg) noticed funerals with only a chaplain and honor guard present. She organized volunteers from the Officers’ Wives Club to attend all Air Force funerals. The Army started its group in the early 1970s, the Navy followed in 1985, Coast Guard in 2006, and Marines later established their version. Today, branches coordinate to cover funerals. They attend every eligible military funeral for active duty, veterans, etc., per branch protocols, as an official part of the ceremony, often presenting condolences and representing the service chief. Escorts from the Old Guard (3rd Infantry Regiment) accompany them. What a wonderful show of support and respect for individuals who truly deserve it!
