George Orwell understood something we are in danger of forgetting.He wrote that if liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.Read that again. Not the right to say what is popular. Not the right to say what the crowd approves of. The right to say the uncomfortable thing, the unwelcome thing, the thing that makes people squirm.That is the whole point of the First Amendment.Our Founders did not protect speech because they wanted polite dinner conversation. They protected it because they knew that free people must be able to challenge power, question authority, and speak hard truths without fear.Speech that everyone likes needs no protection. It is the speech people hate that needs a shield.But look where we are now.We have built a culture of safe spaces, trigger warnings, and speech codes. We have taught a generation that being offended is the same as being harmed. We punish people for wrong opinions, cancel them from their jobs, and push them out of the public square.That is not liberty. That is the road away from it.And here is the irony that should stop us cold. Orwell was writing about England, and England today arrests people for social media posts. They knock on doors over jokes. They police what citizens say online.We are watching a nation that once produced Orwell slide into the very thing he warned against.America still has the First Amendment. It is the strongest protection for free speech in human history. But a right on paper means nothing if the culture no longer believes in it.If we are not careful, we will trade our birthright for comfort, and we will wake up in the same cage England built for itself.The good news is that it is not too late. Liberty is still ours to defend.
