The Bernie Sanders Drinking Game nails something most politicians spend their careers hiding. The word free is the biggest con in American politics.Watch the cartoon. Bernie points at the sky and promises the crowd everything. Medicare for All, free college, housing for all, free childcare. The signs go up, the cheering starts, and nobody asks the one question that matters. Who pays?Flip to the second panel and you get your answer. There sits the taxpayer, staring at a bar tab he never ordered, while the guy beside him chugs a beer that was never his to drink. That is the whole model in one picture.Free is never free. Every dollar the government hands out, it first takes from someone who earned it. There is no magic account in Washington. There is only your paycheck, your savings, and your kids' future earnings.And the real tab dwarfs the one in the cartoon. Independent estimates have pegged Medicare for All alone at more than thirty trillion dollars over ten years. Add the rest of the list and you are not talking about a bar tab. You are talking about a mortgage on the whole country, signed in your name.James Madison saw this trick coming. In Federalist No. 41, he swatted down the idea that the general welfare clause was a blank check for Congress to spend on anything it pleased. If that phrase meant everything, he asked, why bother listing specific powers at all? The founders built a fence around federal spending. Bernie wants to tear it down.Bernie calls his version fairness. In practice, fairness means the government decides your money belongs to someone else, then hands you the bill and tells you to smile about it.The people cheering in that first panel are the same ones stuck with the tab in the second.
