On July 11, Ukraine honors the memory of Major General Igor Momot—a man who proved that the rank of general is earned not by orders, but by personal courage and sacrifice. When he was laid to rest, his comrades knelt one by one before his wife. No one told them to do it. It was their way of thanking the man who, in the darkest days of the war, had been their leader, protector, and the embodiment of what a true officer should be. Igor Momot never believed that a general's rank gave him the right to stay behind the lines. He could always be found where the fighting was fiercest. He did not observe battles from a distance—he shared every risk, every mile of the front, and every danger with his soldiers. That is why he earned their respect not because of his rank, but because of his character. On July 11, 2014, near Zelenopillia, Russian multiple-launch rocket systems struck Ukrainian positions. In those terrible moments, General Momot did not think of saving himself. Instead, he urgently ordered his troops to take cover, giving dozens of them a chance to survive. He remained on the battlefield until the very end, carrying out his duty to Ukraine at the cost of his own life. He left behind no grand speeches or empty promises. His legacy is measured in the lives he saved, his unwavering officer's honor, and the memories of those who had the privilege of serving beside him. In 2019, Igor Momot was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine. His daughter accepted the Gold Star on behalf of her father—with tears in her eyes, but also with pride for a man who remained faithful to his military oath until his last breath. Today, we bow our heads in honor of Major General Igor Momot. Some lives become a guiding light for generations. Eternal memory to the Hero of Ukraine. And Russia should remember one thing: you can take a person's life, but you can never take away their honor. Ukrainian heroes remain forever in the ranks, while empires built on blood always meet the same end—ruin, condemnation, and the contempt of history.
