Thomas Sowell wrote that line in 1999. He was not predicting an invasion. He was describing a takeover that had already happened.
Look at the numbers now.
A study of 12,372 professors at 116 top colleges found registered Democrats outnumbering registered Republicans 8.5 to 1. On political donations, the ratio was 95 to 1. That is not a faculty lounge. That is a one party state with a library.
Now look at what a generation raised inside those gates believes.
Gallup's most recent survey found that for the first time ever, fewer than half of Democrats view capitalism positively. Just 42 percent. Meanwhile 66 percent view socialism positively. Among Democrats under 50, only 31 percent still have a good word for capitalism. In 2010 that number was 54 percent.
Here is the part the barbarians did not plan for.
The students grew up. They did not stop where their professors stopped. They went all the way to the thing the faculty only flirted with over wine. Democratic Socialists of America candidates have now won 35 primaries this cycle. They took down Rep. Adriano Espaillat in New York after five terms. They took down Rep. Diana DeGette in Denver after fifteen.
The establishment that built the machine is now standing in front of it.
That is what happens when you spend fifty years teaching young people the system is rigged. Eventually they believe you. Then they come for your seat.
Mainstream America is not buying it. Not yet. Gallup still finds 57 percent of Americans view socialism negatively. Free enterprise polls at 81 percent. Small business polls at 95 percent. The country still knows what works, even when the classroom does not.
But only 13 percent of eighth graders are proficient in American history. Forty percent cannot read a primary source and draw a conclusion from it.
In Federalist No. 1, Hamilton warned that the men who wreck republics usually begin by flattering the people and end by ruling them. He assumed the next generation would remember.
That assumption is the whole ballgame.
