5. And now send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter:
Acts 10:5; KJV.
Cornelius, a devout man who feared God, was a commander of a band of Roman soldiers. He fasted, gave alms to the people, and always prayed to God.
In a vision, an angel of God told him to bring Peter from Joppa to Caesarea.
Both are coastal cities on the Mediterranean Sea in Israel.
As they were on their way, Peter had a vision of a sheet lowered from heaven with all kinds of animals, birds, and creeping things. A voice said, "Rise, Peter; kill and eat."
Peter said, "No, I have never eaten anything unclean, against the law of Moses."
This happened three times, with the Lord saying, "What God has cleansed, call not common or impure."
Peter, unsure what this meant, was told by the Spirit that there were men looking for him.
Peter made himself known and asked the purpose of their visit.
The men replied that an angel of God had sent them to bring him to Cornelius and to hear the gospel message from Peter.
The lesson: God cares for those who truly seek him.
God prepared Peter to preach the Gospel to the Gentiles.
Obedience to God's timing and the separate visions allowed God to accomplish His purpose.
The Gospel is for all people; anyone God chooses to save through His Son Jesus is fully accepted. Amen.
